My Top 7 Sci-Fi Films of All Time

**Before I get into my list...Know that I'm not including Super Hero films as I think they are in a category on their own.

7. Star Trek (2009)
A reboot didn't seem like a good idea initially but this film brought new light to an old series. Truly refreshing with dazzling action sequences and more importantly a highly engaging story. You really sympathized with the characters and I believe that will continue to be the case in future installments under the direction of J.J. Abrams of course.

6. The Matrix (1999)
If you are successful at forgetting the sequels that came after this film, you will know how remarkable and groundbreaking this film is and still remains. You can actually overlook Keanu Reeves' vapid/ mediocre performance in this surprise hit. The film's success lied in the originality of it's story line. A film that will never be forgotten. Especially for it's philosophical undertones, engaging premise, it's action scenes and martial arts sequences.

5. Dark City (1998)
This overlooked film is astonishing and a must see for any sci-fi enthusiast. Directed by Alex Proyas of "The Crow" fame comes another dark take but this time in the realm of sci-fi mystery. What I was most impressed with is that you follow the main character as he searches for clues as to what the 'truth' really is and the powers he learns to use. A thought provoking film.

4. Blade Runner (1982)
Way ahead of it's time. Classic Ridley Scott takes us into a whole new, futuristic world where a Blade Runner(Harrison Ford) must track down 4 replicants who seek their maker. Lush set designs, an intriguing/intelligent script, and masterful direction put this film on the map as possibly one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time.

3. District 9 (2009)
This film was shot on a very low budget($30 million) by Hollywood standards and made more than it's money back and inherited rave reviews and I couldn't agree more. Shot at first like a documentary and then turned into a film, it follows an arrogant, foolish man(Wikus) who works for an agency trying to remove stranded aliens and then transforms into an alien himself. He eventually comes to understand the aliens' perspective and helps them to get back home. Character transformations, like this, are most interesting. Might I add that the actor who played Wikus (Sharlto Copley) was brilliant. It was his first acting role too! He's a natural.

2. Gattaca (1997)
This is more of a personal favorite of mine. This is the best Sci-Fi Drama I've seen. It makes you question what it is to be human. One of the film's underlining points is that "There is no gene for the human spirit". Set in a futuristic society where most everyone is born genetically enhanced. But what about those who weren't? These people are considered invalids. Invalids are ostracized and looked at as inferiors. Ethan Hawke plays a man born natural who refuses to accept the hand he's dealt. Beautiful set designs, wonderful direction, splendid acting and a provocative screenplay gives way to this film's success.

1. Inception (2010)
Yes, I just saw this but I can't help but make this my number 1 for many reasons. This is Christopher Nolan's best film to date. Every element in this film is perfect. The performances of every actor is great. Set designs are out of this world. The script is very impressive and highly original. The film engages you on every level. Even the musical score is triumphant and perfectly matched. Amongst the raving reviews are some naysayers and that, I believe, is because this is truly something new. When anything comes along like this, people will either adore or detest it. I, however(along with many others), look forward to multiple viewings of this film.

Sorry if I geeked out there.
